De meest bekende voorbeelden hiervan zijn de Dominion Tank Police en GITS-SAC ( Ghost in The Shell - Stand Alone Complex) anime series en de 2 Ghost In The Shell films. Veel van zijn werken zijn omgezet naar animatie films, tv series en games. Nog 2 volumes van Appleseed volgden vooraleer hij begon aan zijn meest bekende werk Ghost in the Shell ( Kokaku Kidotai in het japans). Na een professionele heruitgave van Black Magic en een 2de volume van Appleseed, maakte hij Dominion in 1986. In 1986 won Appleseed de Seiun Award voor Best Manga en de Galaxy Award voor Best Science Fiction Comic. Seishinsha president Harumichi Aoki merkte zijn werk op en stelde voor om het te publiceren. Na afstuderen begon hij les te geven aan een hogeschool, waar hij Appleseed maakte.
Manga artiest Masamune Shirow (pseudonym van Oda Masanori) studeerde olieverf schilderkunst aan de Osaka University Of Arts toen hij begon met het publiceren van zijn eerste werk Black Magic bij fanzine groep Atlas. Today he is mainly involved in erotic art (ecchi), such as his Galgrease series of poster books and trading cards. The most famous examples of this are the Dominion Tank Police and GITS-SAC ( Ghost in The Shell - Stand Alone Complex ) anime series and the 2 Ghost In The Shell movies.
